‘The Milestone Hotel’, Kensington, London.

The Milestone Hotel

‘The Milestone Hotel’ is a perfect example of a ‘luxurious boutique’ hotel situated in the affluent area of Kensington in London, the website of which can be found by clicking here. The website itself clearly has a purpose to encourage potential customers to stay at the, or use the facilities of the hotel. The website uses snapshots of the hotels elaborate decor and style in order to attract the appropriate and targeted clientele.  This ‘targeted clientele’ is almost certainly that of the affluent, stylish and potentially rather more ‘cultured’ customer.

Analysis of Features

In the following section, I will identify four strengths/weaknesses which I believe the website has. To begin with, a clear strength that the website upholds is the simplicity within its navigational features. This is mainly due to the sites horizontal options bar at the top of each page, which includes a link to the sites ‘home’ page. This makes navigating back and forth from different pages throughout the site incredibly simple, for example, if someone browsing the site gets ‘lost’ they can clearly return to the page where they started out. This link shows this useful feature.

Yet another positive aspect of The Milestone Hotel website is the appropriate usage of photography implemented throughout the sites’ overall layout. This can be seen if one of the page links is clicked on at the top of the page, for example the ‘Rooms & Suites’ page displays a large, slow moving montage of different rooms available for booking in the hotel, assisting in enticing the customer into making a purchase. This particular page also contains a ‘Photo Gallery’ option on the right hand side which allows browsers of the site to gain a vast and detailed insight into the hotel and its’ various features and services.

In contrast to this however, one weakness in terms of layout can be seen in the actual size of the text, which for some people, could be far too small to read. This can be seen in the description of the sites’   ‘Fine Dining’ page. This is a weakness as the website clearly hasn’t considered the possibility that some peoples’ vision is worse than others, which may put off potential customers with poorer vision who can’t properly read certain text on the site. In addition to this, the text included on this page is quite faint in colour, which along with the point above, may discourage clients who have poorer vision from booking a service from this site.

Two Tasks

First task attempted – Making a reservation

In attempting to carry out this task, I first selected the ‘Make a reservation’ link on the left hand side of the home page. This then took me to a reservation page which enables the user to select different room types, people staying and price plans for each room, shown via this link. I then followed the ‘continue’ button at the bottom right hand corner of the page, where I was offered various ‘additional items’. I pressed ‘continue’ again after not selecting any additional items and a page where a customer would be able to then fill in his/her details and complete the reservation. The overall process was quite easy, and could probably be carried out within several minutes, which would obviously prove popular with the paying customer. There were no real issues with this task.

Second Task – Contacting the hotel

I found that in order to contact the hotel, it would again be extremely simple. At the top of the sites’ home page there is a link to the ‘contact us’ page, where there is an ‘easy to use’ form in which a customer would fill in, in order to contact the hotel. Again, there were no real issues with this task.

Micro-blogs and Micro-blogging

A ‘Micro-blog’ is an online service that enables users to communicate in a casual or formal manner. These ‘Micro-blogging’ websites are free to use and are available to anyone who has access to a computer which is connected to the internet, creating the potential for a very large and diverse group of users. Examples of micro-blogs are as follows:

http://www.jaiku.com/

http://twitter.com/

Users of Micro-blogs can ‘add’ other users of the particular micro-blog to communicate and share information with them via, private messaging, instant messaging (usually on a ‘wall’ or ‘wire’) and various photo/multimedia applications. A more detailed description of this service can be found via the following link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microblogging

Micro-blogs can be accessed throughout the globe, therefore they can also be an extremely useful service to people in the learning environment, and can provide users a platform on which to share specific learning resources or notes. The following links indicate how micro-blogs can assist learners in their personal network:
